Set in a fragrant garden of roses and lavender, White Moss House was once owned by Wordsworth, who often rested in the porch here between his wanderings. Built in 1730, it overlooks beautiful Rydal Water. Many famous and interesting walks through fells and lakeland start from the front door. Guests have free use of the local leisure club and swimming pool and free fishing on local rivers and lakes. It has been described by a German gourmet magazine as probably the smallest, most splendid hotel in the world'. Proprietors Peter and Susan Dixon have created an intimate family atmosphere with a marvellous degree of comfort and attention to detail. The seven bedrooms in the main house and the two in the Brockstone Cottage Suite are individually furnished, and most have lake views. Chef Peter Dixon has won international acclaim for his culinary skills including 2 AA Rosettes and a Red Star. The restaurant is deservedly famous for food prepared with imagination and style the best English food in Britain', said The Times and offers an extensive wine list of over 300 bins. Special breaks available. Closed December, January and February. Places of interest nearby: Dove Cottage and Rydal Mount (Wordsworth's houses) are both one mile away.
